DescriptionProject Paradise encompasses the diverse Great Lakes coastal wetland restoration activities on RBG nature sanctuaries, particularly Cootes Paradise and Hendrie Valley (Grindstone Creek).

Project Paradise is the single most important environmental project of our generation in this region. Over eighty-five percent of the Cootes Paradise marsh has disappeared in a seventy-five year period from pollution and an overabundance of carp. It is the largest fresh water wetland restoration project of its kind ever undertaken in the Great Lakes Basin and is a model for others across North America and beyond.

One of the highlights of Project Paradise is the Cootes Paradise Fishway, situated at the outlet of Cootes Paradise beneath the High Level Bridge. The Fishway, in operation from spring through to fall, excludes Common Carp from Cootes Paradise, while allowing access to native fish. Visitors to the Fishway get the opportunity to see thousands of fish course down the "water slide" into their breeding grounds in the marsh. Watching this event is a unique and exciting activity; the Fishway gets thousands of visitors each year. See www.rbg.ca for a schedule of Fishway lifts and for more information.
